Lawrie Brewster
Horror Filmmaker | Founder of British Horror Studio | President of Amicus Productions

Lawrie Brewster is an award-winning independent filmmaker, director, and producer best known for his bold contributions to modern British horror. Based in Scotland, Lawrie rose from humble beginnings to become a leading voice in genre cinema, carving out a distinctive niche with his Gothic visual style, psychological storytelling, and dedication to independent production.
He is the founder of the British Horror Studio, a community-driven creative collective that brings together filmmakers, writers, and artists with a shared passion for horror cinema. The studio is home to Hex Studios, which Lawrie co-founded alongside long-time collaborator and screenwriter Sarah Daly, and the newly revived Amicus Productions, for which he serves as President under the authorisation of the Subotsky Estate.
Lawrie made his directorial debut with the cult horror film Lord of Tears, which introduced audiences to the now-iconic figure of the Owlman. The film won multiple awards and helped establish Lawrie’s reputation as a filmmaker with a distinct voice and a love of dark folklore. He went on to direct and produce a slate of critically regarded horror films, including The Unkindness of Ravens, The Black Gloves, and the sword-and-sorcery fantasy The Slave and the Sorcerer.
A passionate advocate for grassroots cinema, Lawrie believes in giving back to the horror community by sharing knowledge and creating opportunities for emerging creatives. Through his blog, Patreon, and public initiatives, he shares behind-the-scenes insights, personal essays, and practical advice for aspiring filmmakers. His work is often characterised by a deep respect for the legacy of classic British horror, while pushing the genre forward with originality and heart.
When not on set or in the editing suite, Lawrie can be found restoring his Gothic home studio, directing retro-inspired photo shoots, or working alongside Sarah Daly and a loyal circle of friends and collaborators who make up the heart of his cinematic world.
